1st Annual Heart for the Homeless

February 15, 2009--Emmaus Women’s Shelter is hosting its 1st Annual Heart for the Homeless this month. At this event Emmaus Women’s Shelter honors those with a Heart for the Homeless, our donors and supporters. This year the event will be held on February 25th, at Hoofer’s Restaurant.

“This banquet demonstrates our deep appreciation to our volunteers and supporters,” says Jerry Johnson board president. “Volunteers and supporters are changing the world, and changing the lives of homeless women at Emmaus Women’s Shelter. Their efforts have no greater local impact than here in west central Georgia. EWS serves women from LaGrange and Troup County as well as women from Heard, Meriwether and Harris Counties. Rural homelessness is a widespread problem.”

From serving a meal at the OakHaven Women’s Day Center, to teaching a 40-year old woman to read, volunteers are essential to Emmaus Women’s Shelter.

“Without the support of generous supporters and volunteers from all over the community, the Emmaus Women’s Shelter would not be able to offer the same level of service to the homeless women and their children who come through our doors every day,” said Kay Elam, shelter director. “The simplest act of kindness makes such a difference in the lives of these people, and we are so grateful for everyone who supports our work, whether by financial or in-kind support or by donating their time and talent.”

Homeless Women Helping Homeless Haitians

It is not unusual for us to take a moment before lunch to mention things for which we are especially thankful, or to ask for prayer requests. Just hours after the devastating Haiti earthquake on January 12th our women ask for special prayer for their homeless sisters in Haiti. We offered thanks for God’s generosity toward EWS and remembered the women and children who were in the devastated island nation. The conversation continued, and I drifted in and out of the chatter, until I suddenly realized that a yard sale to help recovery work in Haiti was being organized.

Encouraged at their concern and delighted by their ingenuity, the staff just stood back and admired these homeless women as they went about the planning, organization and development required for a yard sale.

Despite rainy days on both Saturdays (January 16th and 23rd) the turnout was unexpectedly large and the reward was tremendous! Thanks to each of you who shopped with us and for everyone who provided men’s and women’s clothing, household good, children’s toys and clothes for the sale! It couldn’t have been better!
